Letter : Charleston, S.C., to Celia, 1865 June 18.

Letter concerns Sawyer's family, his return to Charleston, South Carolina after the Civil War, his appointment as a tax collector, and his hope that "the madness of the party who cry for punishment of those who have been the cause of the war will give way to a better and a different policy." Sawyer mentions a deaf and dumb family member named George, who is learning an "alphabet for deafmutes," and asks Celia for her "sign manual."

U.S. Senator from South Carolina. Born in Bolton, Massachusetts, Frederick A. Sawyer took charge of a normal school in Charleston, South Carolina in 1859. During the Civil War he and his family were allowed to return North. In 1865 Sawyer returned to Charleston and was active in advancing reconstruction measures.
